This horse has been stolen - please read on:
Domino is a 10yr old 15'3 blue and white cob with a very distinctive skin condition which leaves him with bald patches on his rump and shoulder. He has a very loveable character but can be naughty when ridden.
Please circulate this information to friends and family and if anyone has any information, please contact Amanda on 07816 612458 or 01261 851212 |
"My friends horse domino was on loan to a riding school where i worked at in lossiemouth(scotland) when the yard owner gave him to a dealer from Kelso he is now classed as stolen as owner never gave permission for him to be moved and she still has his passport. she has been given the runaround from the dealer 1st saying hes on loan to a girl in Kelso, then hes on loan in durham and now an associate of his has told her he was passed to several other dealers and then to the sales and has apparently gone for meat. I know this is a long shot but I also know all sales are monitored and any information would be appreciated and we would really appreciate it if you could display his picture and information in hope that he is returned safely.

The Mallets Are Out – Wales V Great Britain!
International Charity Polo Match in aid of the Welsh Guards Afghanistan Appeal
Polo comes to Powys on July 17th 2010 when Wales Goes up against Great Britain on home ground - the hallowed turf of the Glanusk Estate, set in the stunning Usk Valley.
Wales will take on Great Britain for the first time at Glanusk, in one of the fastest team sports in the world on a specially prepared polo field, which to the uninitiated is the size of three soccer pitches!
“The charity polo day will offer spectators a unique insight into a truly thrilling sport. Many visitors will never have had the opportunity to absorb the excitement of a live polo match before . Our event is about making polo accessible to all“ commented Harry Legge-Bourke, who is the mastermind behind the event. “Here at Glanusk we can heighten the profile of this electrifying sport in Wales and make it accessible to all, and at the same time we can raise money for an extremely important cause”.

I have received the following email - can you help?!
"We’ve been trying to find land for our paintball company and for our team to train. The land we are currently using will become a golf course v, shortly (end of Aug) having been there for over a year now; so firstly we’re in need of about 2 acres of flat pasture land and secondly we’re also trawling for some woodland in between Worcester / Hereford / Ross about 10acres preferably but we’re open to options with that. The training ground has to be within a 5 mile radius of Hereford.
For the record we currently have the youngest paintball team in the whole of the UK and possibly in Europe and All of our team players/staff/coaches are professional in every aspect of paintball and sport in general. The site we use is completely litter/paintball and damage free and has remained so for the duration of its use thank you for your time and we look forward to hearing from yourselves,
Regards Marc Harwood. ( Academy 49 Paintball.)"

Horse and Hound are reporting that Hay and straw merchants are warning horse owners to stock up on supplies now in preparation for what could be the leanest winter in 25 years.
Supplies of 2009's hay have all but sold out and prices for this year's first cut are already around £3.50 (for a small bale), and could double over the winter with farmers predicting poor yields due to drought. Click here to read full article.....
and then see our Hay/haylage/straw page to order yours!

I have had an email reporting a possible big cat attack in the Upton Bishop area, H'fdshire. It reads as follows:
"I was just wondering if you could make people aware that there is a cat in the Upton Bishop area. It attacked my horse this morning (2/7/10). I did not witness the attack but the wounds were definitely claw marks and on his back, rump and sides as a cat would attack in the wild. The poor horse has one very nasty, deep gash on his rear end which unfortunately the vet couldn’t close and he is very, very sore. Hopefully he will make a full recovery but as he is an old horse it is a bit of a worry in this weather and the flies as they are! Rach."

Jenny Carling has gained approval for funding for a Bridleway Network in the Forest of Dean District. Great news for riders! Jenny would like to thank all those who signed the register of interest - too many to email individually. I am sure I am not alone in saying "Well done and thankyou to Jenny!"
They will shortly be looking for a self-employed person to carry out a feasibility study and route investigation on their behalf. The bid for funding was to carry out a detailed survey of existing "bridleways" and to work with landowners in joining up the fragmented network across the whole of the FOD District.

It's Been NICKED - www.itsbeennicked.co.uk - has just been launched in the UK.
The website provides victims of theft with a place where they can list
their stolen goods within minutes of discovering the crime and reporting
it to the Police.
The database is searchable by anyone finding or being offered an item that
they feel is suspicious.
All items listed must have been reported stolen to the Police. This is for user safety as the only contact details posted are the Police contact
phone number and the crime incident number.
Some sample uses for the site include:
A horse transporter lorry has been stolen from a farm. Within minutes of discovering the crime the farm manager can report the theft, and upload
details. The horsebox is listed stolen before it can reach a port and be
loaded onto a ferry. Customs officers and harbour masters who may be
suspicious of the driver can quickly search to see if the lorry has been
stolen.
A reclamation yard has been offered wrought iron gates and matching garden
furniture. They can quickly search to see if these are listed before
accepting them for resale.
A car full of boxes of jeans and trainers has been found in a village hall
car park. The finder, and the Police officer called to attend, can
quickly search to see if the items have been reported stolen.
The site is national - so items stolen in Scotland can be listed and
searched for easily and quickly even if they are found in a van in
Cornwall.

Changes to driving legislations will impact on horse industry warns BHS
New driving licensing legislation revoking ‘grandfather rights’, to accompany learner drivers in small lorries, buses and vehicle plus trailer combinations will have a profound impact on the equestrian industry according to The British Horse Society.
From 6 April 2010 drivers who passed their car driving test before January 1997 will no longer be able to act as ‘supervising’ drivers to those learning to drive small lorries, buses and vehicle plus trailer combinations (but not car/horse trailer combinations i.e. Category B+E). Crucially for the equestrian industry this will include 7.5 tonne horse boxes.
In a response to questioning by The British Horse Society, the Driving Standards Agency stated: “Drivers who passed their car driving test before January 1997 were granted implied entitlement, sometimes known as ‘grandfather rights’, to drive small lorries, buses and vehicle plus trailer combinations. These are classed as categories C1, C1+E, D1 and D1+E and subject to certain restrictions.
“It should be noted that it was never the intention to allow learner drivers to drive a vehicle on public roads unless being supervised by a qualified driver who had passed a test for that category of vehicle.
“Clearly there are road safety issues involved where a person who has never passed the relevant driving test will act as the supervisor for a driver in these categories.
“These changes will not affect the person’s existing entitlement to drive C1 or D1 vehicles or vehicle plus trailer combinations. They will however make it illegal for anyone to act as a supervising driver in such vehicles if they only hold pre-1997 implied entitlements.”
The new legislation has not been widely publicised and the BHS is concerned that many drivers will not be aware that they will be affected when the changes come into place on 6 April 2010.
Sheila Hardy, BHS Senior Executive Safety said: “It is concerning that this legislation has not been more widely publicised. It has left people no time at all to prepare themselves.”
A detailed description of the changes from the DSA is available on The British Horse Society website.

World Horse Welfare’s Make a Noise campaign
"Dear Supporter,
11th February was a landmark date for World Horse Welfare’s Make a Noise campaign to end the long distance transportation of horses
to slaughter in Europe. Over 400 Members of the European Parliament registered support for Written Declaration 54/2009,
calling for a review of current transport regulation.
This meant that the Declaration was officially adopted by the European Parliament.
Thanks to your efforts, we are one step closer to ending these cruel and unnecessary journeys.
It is essential that we keep up momentum by continuing to highlight this issue with local politicians as well as the European Commission.
Please help us to end the needless suffering caused by long-distance transportation to slaughter in Europe." Click here to find out more

Local bridleways group, The Forest of Dean Riders and Carriage Drivers Association, have been working very hard behind the scenes bidding for funding to create a network of long-distance and local, circular routes across the Forest of Dean District.
The great news is that their application has cleared the first hurdle and they now need to add some more details to their final bid. They need to show just how many people would appreciate a “joined-up” network of bridleways. As riders and carriage drivers there are obvious benefits to creating new paths, and especially linking some of the areas that are currently inaccessible due to busy road crossings or lack of connecting bridleways. To read more and download the support form, please click here! THEY NEED YOUR SUPPORT - IT'S FOR YOU!

British Horse Society declares policy on use of hyperflexion:
As the debate over the use of hyperflexion as a training technique continues, The British Horse Society has published its official stance:
The British Horse Society strongly recommends that all riders training horses on the flat and over fences should adhere to the official instruction handbook of the German National Equestrian Federation. Whilst we appreciate that horses are as individual as humans, and that some may require corrective schooling, the BHS’s stand on hyperflexion (by which we mean the extreme flexion of the horse’s head and neck beyond normal limits) remains clear: it is an unacceptable method of training horses by any rider for any length of time.
We recognise that the scientific evidence is conflicting, and likely to remain so as each party seeks determinedly to prove its case. For this reason we doubt that science will ever provide a single, clear, unambiguous and unarguable answer. It therefore falls to humans to do what the horses cannot, namely to follow the precautionary principle: as nature provides no evidence of horses choosing to move in hyperflexion for an extended period of time; and as hyperflexion can create tension in the horse’s neck and back which has no justifying necessity; and as the horse in hyperflexion is, by definition, unable fully to use its neck; and as the psychological consequences of such treatment remain latent (perhaps in an analogous position with horses which are whipped aggressively but which can still pass a five star vetting), we should take all appropriate steps to discourage the use of this training technique, for the horse’s sake.

ICE -
'In Case of Emergency
'
We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.
If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn
't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this
'ICE
' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign.
The concept of
'ICE
' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As mobile phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name
'ICE
' ( In Case Of Emergency).
The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn
't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and Hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as
'ICE.
'
For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!
